Our animals

Cattle

We have 40 friendly suckler cows, most of which are British Blue cross Fresian. We have two Bazadaise bulls that run with the herd from May to August. Our cows then calve from February onwards. Our cow's calm nature mean they are easy to work with making our job easier at calving. The little calves born grow into stunning beef cattle and are reared here on the Sussex Downs over the following couple of years.

Alongside the commercial herd we have a pedigree herd of Bazadaise producing all our bulls for the future. The Bazadaise breed (pronounced Baz-A-Day) originates from South-West France. The Bazadaise is very much a superior Beef Breed for its grass finishing ability, mobility, extended muscle and ease of calving and is gaining worldwide reputation for the fine flavoured low fat and well-marbled meat.

If you are staying during the months of February to April you may well get the opportunity to see a calf being born.
Pigs

We have two resident pigs, Rufus II and Wilma. They are an old English breed called Gloucester Old Spot pigs. They have an excellent life rooting around in a windbreak, on view from our two bedroom holiday cottages. In March 2019 Wilma gave birth to 11 gorgeous piglets, be prepared to loose hours watching the piglets if you are staying during summer 2019.. They are lovingly reared and enjoy vegetable peelings and of course conventional pig food.
Hens

Next to the pigs reside our Light Sussex hens, they have a striking plumage and a docile nature. Light Sussex are a productive bird who can lay around 260 eggs a year. The hens roam a large grass paddock and lay top quality light brown eggs.
